El Penol

El Penol town borders the resort town Guatape. The granite rock Piedra del Penol though is located in town of Guatape, is claimed by the town of ElPenol to be theirs! The Granite rock has 740 steps. The Observation deck at 740th step gives sweeping views of the man made Penol Guatape reservoir. We took a full day private tour to Guatape and El Penol from Medellin. The climb is steep but easily doable. The views atop are worth the hike.

To the north of Salento and east of Medellin is the resort town of Guatape. The town and the buildings are picturesque. The Guatape reservoir provides tourists boating, jetskiing and fishing opportunities.

Medellin is the second largest city of Colombia. It is a picturesque city with skyscrapers, greenery and mountains in the background. We had 3 nights and 2 days in Medellin. We took a day tour to Guatape and El Penol on one day. The last day we had time to visit two of the main attractions in Medellin . The Botero Plaza surrounded by Museum of Antioquia and the Palace of Culture has famous sculptures of Botero. So does the Museum of Antioquia along with other artifacts by Botero. We used the Metro to ride around the city.

The Metro Cable Car ride was the second attraction. We took Metro train to Acevedo station, from there we took the line K cable car to Santo Domingo station and returned back to Acevado without getting off at Santo Domingo. The Cable car ride offers views of Medellin and its neighborhoods which vary significantly in wealth. One can see the favelas similar to Rio De Janeiro doting the hills with skyscrapers in the valley
